The Nordic Championship in Spearfishing starts now!

The Nordic Championship in spearfishing is just around the corner, and both organizers and athletes are ready for an exciting weekend of spearfishing. This year, the championship has a strong focus on sustainability.

Norway has the honor of hosting the Nordic Championships 2+24, which will take place in Stokmarknes, in Northern Norway. Teams from Norway, Denmark, and Finland will be competing.

These will compete for Nordic the gold medal

Spearfishing is primarily an individual sport, with focus on personal results. However, athletes are also a part of national teams, and the team results are based on the individual scores.

Each country can participate with maximum nine athletes of each gender, along with one reserve athlete who can step in if needed. Each team consists of maximum three athletes, allowing for a maximum of three teams per gender per country. This makes a total of maximum six teams per country in the championship.

Sustainability is key

Sustainability is a key focus for the event. The organizing club, Hadsel Underwater Club, has partnered with local stakeholders to ensure that no fish remains are wasted or discarded into the sea.

– We and the Norwegian Diving Federation are committed to utilizing the entire fish, and ensuring that nothing goes to waste is a top priority, says the organizer.

During the weekend, a local chef will transform some of the catch into a banquet on Saturday. The chef is eager to work with fresh ingredients and has a strong commitment to sustainability.

– The chef will not only use every part possible of the fish but he has also begged us to give him the fish heads so he can make fish stock out of it.

Any inedible discards will be delivered to Lerøy Seafood, a leading seafood company with a history dating back to 1899. Lerøy processes fresh fish from the local fishing industry year-round at their facility in Melbu, close to the competition area.

– We have an agreement with Lerøy Seafood to handle all the waste we can't use for food, to ensure it's processed properly, says the club.

– This helps us avoid dumping it at sea which is something we want to at avoid at all circumstances, the club concludes.
